If we manage to increase the production of plantain, yucca and sweet potato, we will be raising and improving food supply for the people, was the consensus of the participants in a videoconference under the leadership of vice governor Yunia Perez Hernandez, which took place at the seat of the Provincial Government of Holguin with representatives of the 14 municipalities, and the attendance of several specialists and managers linked to this strategic plan.
But to reach that goal it is necessary to take into account situations such as climate change, the use of biological agents over chemical ones that in the long run break the balance of the ecosystem, among others that depend on man and dedication to phytosanitary work, said the specialist in the subject Nelson Perez.
Emphasis is placed on knowing the pests and diseases that affect plantations at this time and the ways to combat them, hence the importance of deepening the knowledge of what biological agents are available, as well as those that can be produced in each unit with various plants such as the neem tree, mottled spurge, tobacco, among others.
For that reason, the imperative link with the academy, and the call to detail which of the researches carried out are implemented or not.
In this regard, the University of Holguin, the provincial delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) and other research centers of the province have to contribute with knowledge, research and grass-root joint work in search of solutions, according to the vice-governor's orientation.
About this link, Rene Guerrero - head of the Holguin Fishing Enterprise (PescaHol) - informed about a course on Aquaculture programmed for February, although it will not be the only line of research with the House of High Studies of Holguin.
Precisely, if there had been a greater interest, the delivery of freshwater fish and its industrial derivatives would have been greater last 2020, a relevant aspect in the elevation of protein quality, Guerrero pointed out.
Likewise, the contribution of meat from lesser livestock from the completion of the livestock modules, highlighted Ramon Rodriguez Silva, who emphasized the need to bring forward the date set for this program, added the official who is in charge of the Food and Nutritional Sovereignty Program in the Provincial Government.
During the videoconference, the need for joint work became evident, as in the fight against pests and diseases through joint and integrated work, the generalization of experiences, research and implementation of research aimed at increasing food production, and the much-needed contracting of all items to be produced and marketed.
