The Provincial Weather Forecast Center of Holguin is carrying out a new study on climate variations and trends as part of the priorities established by the Tarea Vida, a Cuban State plan to face global warming and extended to about 70 municipalities in the country.
Meteorologist Graciela Rivas explained to the Cuban News Agency (ACN) that the program will contribute to the management of vulnerable ecosystems, natural resources, prioritized economic sectors and human welfare, which will influence decision-making processes to preserve these values.
The Provincial Weather Forecast Center specialist emphasized that the project will update the behavior of meteorological variables, including temperature, rainfall, relative humidity, wind strength and direction, as well as extreme meteorological phenomena, including tropical cyclones, severe local storms and coastal flooding due to sea penetrations.
At the same time, he emphasized, the program will be applicable to risk management, water resources, land use planning, environmental education and mitigation of the adverse effects of climate change in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, transportation, construction and health, in order to formulate long-term sustainable development strategies.
She also indicated that as part of the informatization of society, the results of this project will be summarized in a multimedia, which will allow the updating of contents related to this variable, of interest for the development of tourism and food sovereignty.
The Provincial Meteorological Center of Holguin also participates in research on energy production, sugar cane, environmental impact assessment and industrial development, through integration with the CubaNíquel Business Group, the University of Holguin, the Provincial Delegation of Agriculture and the Ministry of Tourism, among other organizations.
Tarea Vida includes among its projects in the eastern province, the tourist use of beaches and the protection of vulnerable species of endemic flora and fauna, which may be affected by the change in temperature or intense drought.
