Given the importance of the contribution of science to the combat of Covid-19, the weekly meeting with Holguin experts was held this September 2nd, under the presidency of the Governor of Holguin province Julio Cesar Estupiñan Rodriguez.
With the presence of the First Secretary of the Party Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, the Vice Prime Minister of Cuba Inés María Chapman Waugh, and the member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Party Joel Queipo Ruiz, the pandemic situation in this province was updated.
In his report, epidemiologist Osmany Puig detailed that the situation continues to be very complex in the province, for this he exemplified that in the 14 municipalities there was an increase of positive cases in the months of this summer season.
Especially in Holguín, Moa and Cueto, although the latter, together with Mayarí, are leaving this negative group for the moment, and Antilla and Urbano Noris are joining them, while Moa has maintained a stable behavior.
The imbalance between medical discharges and active cases is also worrying, but it is encouraging that more positive cases are being detected in the isolation centers, as a sign that the screening work in the community is effective.
However, the call is to be made at home, since intra-household transmission is a red light bulb at all times, given that it is at home where self-care measures are relaxed.
It is remembered that the mathematical forecasts point to high figures in the first days of this September, for this reason, it is called to improve the orientation and communication with the population.
Also to the rational use of all the resources at our disposal, such as antibiotics, rapid tests, PCR tests, SUMA technology, x-rays, or whatever is useful for the early detection of the disease.
It is important to prevent the patient from reaching a serious condition, where the chances of recovery are reduced and show a high rate worldwide, said Dr. Dariel Suñol Mulet, head of the intensive care unit at the Dr. Fermín Valdés Domínguez military hospital.
At the meeting of experts, attention was drawn to dengue, influenza B and H1N1 still in circulation, but it was explained that there are symptoms that may coincide, however, diarrhea and secretion in the upper respiratory tract point to the presence of Covid-19, said Dr. Katia María Ochoa, provincial director of Public Health.
The value of the rapid test, which costs about ten million pesos a month, is emphasized, and its follow-up is indicated until the end, especially when 46% of the children are asymptomatic.
In this regard, Dr. Alberto Píriz Azza explained that great attention should be paid to adult patients, who can change their clinical status in one hour, while children show this transition in six to eight hours.
The renowned pediatrician added that in 32% of the children Covid-19 starts on the third day, and that an early warning is the skin rash.
He also said that the decision to treat children from two years of age and older in the municipalities of Moa, Mayarí, Cueto, Banes and Gibara who became ill with Covid-19 was the right one, where they were assisted by a previously prepared staff and with good results, which resulted in 89 fewer referrals to the provincial capital city, and that only two evolved to moderate and were treated at the Provincial Pediatric Hospital.
The cases that are exempted from this process are those with morbidities such as patients with heart disease, oncologic ones, or cerebral palsy, prostrated and epileptic patients, reasoned Píriz Azza.
He also explained that since the mothers cannot be assisted at the pediatric hospitals, the work was organized and they are already being treated at the center created at the EIDE sports school.
Doctors in Medicine Juan Carlos Ortiz Sablón and Alberto Píriz Azza agreed on the call for a rational use of oxygen, antibiotics and x-ray tests, since the statistics speak for themselves, indicating that six percent of the children were positive in the results of this last analysis.
It was also learned that the mobile application is ready and will soon be shared among all health institutions in the province so that patient care is provided under a unified and collective criterion, and as a sign that the weekly meetings of Holguin experts with their leaders have a justified raison d'être.
