This August 28 there will be a videoconference debate on the situation of agro-livestock farming in the province of Holguin, its present and future actions.
Under the presidency of Rigoberto Rivero Durán - coordinator of the sector in the Provincial Government -, and the presence of Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez - First Secretary of the Party in the province - and of the Vice Prime Minister of Cuba, Inés María Chapman Waugh, it is deepened in what has been done and to be done in what remains of 2021.
At first, the previous indications aimed at promoting the sector are analyzed, as well as the shortcomings and successes in each territory, where the municipality of Sagua de Tánamo was highlighted, which should be imitated for the positive responses it has given in its local production, and the shipment of meat and milk to the industry, as well as the contribution to the neighboring territory of Moa.
The other side are municipalities such as Rafael Freire and Antilla that are going backwards in their work, Banes, Urbanos Noris and Báguanos that are stagnating.
And although the other municipalities are moving forward, they do not show the necessary completeness, with the honorable distinction of Sagua de Tánamo and Frank País, especially the latter.
Objective and subjective problems that have been affecting agricultural and livestock production were discussed, as well as its commercialization among the population and the supply of meat and milk to the industry.
It was recognized that the drought affects especially in the coastal municipalities, that fuel does not reach the level of supplies of previous years - motivated by the blockade, that Covid-19 has impacted part of the personnel linked to the sector, even so, alternatives must be sought, suggested Santiesteban Velázquez.
Take as an example the construction of rustic farming houses, where at least 14 must be built, but sady there are municipalities that have not even begun them "waiting for resources such as cement or other imported components", when the orientation is to start with what is available, so that when the rest arrives it will only be to complete the construction, remarked the First Secretary, and added that September 30 was the deadline, and that the non-compliances will be analyzed.
Many people justify that the production of vegetables in the vegetable gardens decreases due to water shortage -as in Antilla-, which is true, but there are alternative crops, such as okra, which is ideal for this time of the year, in this respect, alternatives must be sought, he emphasized.
It is also important to increase the number of backyards and plots, as they are a way of bringing urban agriculture to the community, and its consequent benefits.
It was also noted that Cueto is making progress in its planting plan; however, yucca, as a priority crop, has lagged slightly behind, therefore, this action must be well intentioned and well organized, remarked the First Secretary.
Indications were given for the fostering of agriculture in the province, in view of the need to produce and reduce imports, hence the discussion on actions to guarantee end-of-year sales.
It was reiterated that it is imperative to guarantee the seedbeds for the next sowing, on the dates indicated.
It was informed that imported seeds of corn, lettuce and cabbage are already in the province, since tomato seeds are obtained in the territory.
The First Secretary of the Party emphasized the need to work on all fronts, with emphasis on the livestock modules that should provide much more meat than the Pork Company itself, if they are willing to do so.
He also insisted on short-cycle crops, on the call to the conscience of the producer in times like the ones the country is going through, and on the coffee harvest with its own strength, since there will be no mobilization due to the pandemic situation.
In a small but compact summary, Cuban Vice Prime Minister Inés María Chapman Waugh stressed the importance of applying science and innovation to agricultural production, as this would provide a solution to many of the problems discussed in this videoconference.
She mentioned that there are already experiences in obtaining seawater for agricultural irrigation - as the Cuban border guards are doing.
It is known that it is raining less and less, but that water is not stored as before in cisterns, in addition to the use of canals, Chapman Waugh suggested.
And for irrigation, inventions are made with the same pipes that are produced in the country, and Holguín has the advantage of having two plastic pipe factories, it is only necessary to put science and innovation to work in terms of production, and in that the universities of the province are a bulwark, concluded Cuba's Deputy Prime Minister Inés María Chapman Waugh.
