The videoconference of the Intersectorial Commission of the Program for Food Sovereignty met this February 12 in the Provincial Government of Holguín, under the presidency of the Deputy-governor, Yunia Pérez Hernández, and the coordination officer of the Food Program, comrade Ramón Hernández Rojas, where there was a deep debate and exchange of experiences that serve as guide for other municipalities committed to this important and necessary path.
There was consensus that the accountability of the municipality of Gibara was good and therefore becomes a mirror for other demarcations, because in this coastal territory they work quite well in the different production units.
This jurisdiction is proud to export across the seas two varieties of peppers, as well as other agricultural products on the border.
It is also worth mentioning the various productions of its mini-industries and the three varieties of banana that achieve good yields in the Atanagildo Cajigal cooperative farm.
Also the three clones of sweet potato rescued that offer better profit than others under exploitation today.
No less important have been the cultivation of earthworm humus, as well as the more than one hundred varieties of pasture and forage in the flagship unit El vapor, an experience that expands throughout the territory of Gibara.
It is recognized that the cultivation of rice is necessary, but beans have set a standard in Gibara, especially with the Cubana 23 variety, native to the place, which with significant yields and high nutritional values is gaining strength among consumers, as well as the caupi, a bean appreciated by the people.
Gibara also dreams with the rough fodder, with the cultivation of soybean, chickpea; and the meat which is still below the expected levels in the whole province, that is why the Vice-governor insisted on its follow-up and strict control.
Miriam Bárbara Rojas Hechavarría, head of the Department of Science, Development and Institutional Communication of the Provincial Delegation of Agriculture, emphasized that the livestock module should be promoted from the productive forms according to the communities where they are located.
Gibara is recognized for its contribution to the feeding of its inhabitants, as well as the inhabitants of Antilla, Moa and the city of Holguín.
Although Gibara has significant contributions from its research centers such as UEICA, the director of this entity, Héctor Abel Arias Torrente, argued that it has lacked greater scope and depth because the investigations of this center should reach the productive units more quickly, as happens in every Inivit investigation and its immediate application in the municipality of Santo Domingo, in the central Cuban province of Villa Clara.
Arias Torrente also explained that in Moa there is a previous experience on the use of zeolite in zeoponic gardens and organic vegetable gardens, and that today it could be a good option for agricultural production in that municipality.
He also argued that the Sulfocalcic Broth is a chemical element whose use has proven to be ecological, and not harmful as some producers allude, so much so that those who used it had no effects with the trip.
All municipalities were reminded of the importance of linking science with production, and in that particular the Municipal University Centers have much to contribute, said Dr. in Sciences Luis Aguilera, from the University of Holguin.
